Play Doh Pumpkin Mat

Updated: Sep 17, 2020

My daughter loves rolling, squishy and mixing up her Play Doh. I decided to make her a Play Doh Pumpkin mat so she could explore other textures that will be added to her pumpkin design. I recently stopped at our local Dollar Tree and stocked up on some seasonal items and art supplies. I will mostly likely be reusing several of the items that I purchased for today's activity. To decorate the pumpkin you are going to need the following items.

Materials

  • Pipe Cleaners

  • Sequins, Beads, or Gems

  • Orange Clay

  • Fall Leaves

  • Hot Glue or Liquid Glue

Let's get started, first print out the free Play Doh Pumpkin Mat on card stock and laminate it or use contact paper. Contact paper and card stock could probably also be found at the dollar store. I personally love laminating almost every worksheet I make. It's probably not necessary to laminate if you will be using it once. I will be laminating mine since I plan to do this activity several times this month.

Have your little one fill the pumpkin with orange clay. They might need a roller to evenly spread the clay. The one I found at the dollar store included a couple of stencils. You can also use regular Play Doh or homemade Play Doh. For this next step your little one might need some help. Hot glue a leave to a pipe cleaner or have your little one glue a leave with regular liquid glue. Note, vines usually curl up so twist the pipe cleaner to mimic the look. Use black clay to make the eyes, nose and mouth or you can cut them out of construction paper. Have your little one place the eyes, nose and mouth onto the pumpkin. As they are placing the parts on the pumpkin have your child identify the shapes, if any. Decorate the pumpkin using sequence, beads, or gems. Placing each sequence, bead or gem helps them work on their fine motor sills. Once the glue has dried up have your child add it to the pumpkin.

You can also talk about facial expressions while your child is designing their pumpkin. Is your pumpkin happy, angry, or sad? Join in and design your own or have a friendly competition between siblings.
