Polar Bears Day 1

Updated: Jan 11, 2021

We will be reading Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What do you Hear,? by Bill Martin Jr.; for the entire month of January. This week we will focus on the letter P and learn a little bit about polar bears. For instance, did you know that polar bears fur is not actually white? Their top layer of fur is actually translucent.

Since each week we will be focusing on a letter, we will probably keep all the letters in a binder or folder. My goal is to get thru the entire alphabet before the year ends. We will probably revisit some of the letters again. For this week's letter my daughter colored the letter P, pink and glued some polar bears.

You can download the P is for Polar Bear file here.

This next activity is the cutest. We used blue and black card stock, construction paper would work as well. You're also going to need liquid glue and cotton balls. I traced the face on to black card stock and also added some shoulders. I then explained how polar bears have black skin underneath all their fur. We added the cotton balls to keep the polar bear warm and then glued the rest of the body parts. We had a small snowball fight afterwards with the left over cotton balls.

The next activity I made is really to help my child identify numbers. We're starting off with the number three this week. I cut the puzzle pieces and my daughter glued them back in place. As she placed each piece we counted each piece.

The Number 3 Puzzle file can be found here.

For the last activity I made two letter mazes. One which includes only capital letters and the other contains both lower case and upper case letters. My daughter followed the maze by covering each letter using bingo chips. You can always use dot stickers to cover the letters. Remember the goal is for your child to identify the letter.
